Today's Data for Today's Teachers

With the start of each school year, classrooms fill with new students, each with unique experiences, strengths and weaknesses, and individual needs for their new teachers to meet. To help them meet these challenges, the Mizuni Solution gives teachers the information they need to hit the ground running on the first day of class, providing each student with the instruction and support they require.
It starts with a face—a photo of each student on the teacher's monitor—and really gets moving with data that gives teachers a clearer picture of where their new students have "come from" academically. In addition to performance on last year's annual state test, teachers can typically access assessment data from several years earlier, providing a longitudinal perspective of students' performance and educational experiences. On-demand reports show not only students' scale scores and academic growth over time, but also detailed information on performance in specific content areas. Many national, state, and even local assessments can be mapped to curricular objectives, matching each test question with a particular academic standard. This level of detail arms educators with tremendous insight into each child's learning needs, giving them a significant advantage in lesson planning and goal setting for the year to come.
And with Mizuni, that's just some of what teachers can access before Day 1.
Behind the scenes, the Mizuni Data Warehouse consolidates summative and formative assessment data with demographic information, attendance records, discipline referrals, contacts, and other information teachers need, and links this student data to teachers and classrooms. Throughout the school year, teachers use the Mizuni Dashboard Suite to easily access detailed, timely data to help determine classroom- and student-level needs and plan appropriate instruction. “I use the data to track where my students' weaknesses are and laser focus in on them to write my lesson plans," says Judy Wells, a teacher at Pasadena Independent School District in Pasadena, Texas. New assessment data is made available to teachers within hours or even minutes of being keyed in, putting information in front of teachers when it can actually be used to inform their daily work. It's today's data about today's students.
Teachers also use the technology to easily identify students who need remediation in specific content areas as well as those who may benefit from certain interventions. If, for example, a ninth grader is showing some of the early warnings of dropping out (excessive absences, poor course grades, behavioral problems, or other research-based indicators), her teacher and other school staff will automatically be alerted, allowing them to quickly take the appropriate steps to steer the student back on track before it's too late.
Automated processes like these and valuable, easy-to-read reports at a few clicks of the mouse save staff many hours of data collection and number crunching. This means more time for reflection on the right information; collaboration with colleagues and sharing of effective strategies; curriculum improvement; lesson planning; and direct, highly-targeted work with students.
This valuable information, consolidated and made accessible through cutting edge tools from Mizuni, has helped teachers produce impressive results in student learning and success. From raising test scores to helping educators to keep students in the pipeline all the way to graduation day, teachers like Judy Wells agree: the Mizuni Solution delivers. “Mizuni makes me a better instructional leader on my campus and in my classroom,” says Ms. Wells. “I’m excited about where we have been, but also where Mizuni is going to take us.”
